I always find it fun to discover what other creative people like to use most- so here’s a little roundup of my favourite art supplies which I use the most.
Watercolours- I have a great set of Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolours. I actually had them when I was at school, but never fully appreciated their versatility and quality until the last year or so. Phoebe also appreciates them, but likes to use a lot more pigment in her pigment- water ratio than I do, so some of my half pans are going to need replacing pretty soon! I love the range of colours and the palette space as well as the fact it’s easy to slip into a bag to take out.
Gouache- I’ve only recently started using gouache but i have to say it’s starting to rival my beloved watercolours. I’ve got a Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache Introductory Paint Set, which comes with 8 tubes. I’ve found the colours really easy to mix and love playing with them in my journalling Bible and sketchbook.
Pens- My set of Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens I got after using and loving the ‘B’ size one from our local art shop. I use them mostly for lettering, and inking outlines and flower details. I’m a bit gutted that I’ve mislaid my small one- which I had removed from the pack because I loved using it so much!
I also occasionally use Sigma gel pens (white and gold usually) when I’m lettering, often on cards and thankyou notes for my shop orders. I usually get these from Paperchase or a stationery shop depending on where I am when my current one(s) run out!
Aquabrushes- I have a set of three Pentel Aquash aquabrushes which are handy for travelling and not needing to have a cup of water nearby. It took me a little while to get the hang of them and I usually stick to my traditional brushes- except that I have filled one with India Ink which makes lettering practise a little easier! I am definitely glad to have them to make quick painting possible though.
Brushes- I love the Winsor and Newton brushes that came with my paints, and another set which my brother got me years and years ago. I need to invest in some more pretty soon though, since they’re a little well loved now.
Paper – I jump between watercolour papers, but at the moment I’m using Daler Rowney Aquafine. I also have a mixed media spiral bound book which is good for larger, not so wet sketches. I have a few cheap Crawford and Black ones which I mostly just sketch out designs and play in, since they don’t hold water too well.
Pencils- 2Bs, 4Bs, again mostly from my artistic days at school! Nothing very special required there!
I hope that’s interesting, or useful if you’re going to pick up some art supplies and don’t know where to start. It’s easiest to figure out your style before you invest in a load of different materials- I have a lot of other, less used art supplies in our study/ studio space, which I’ve experiemented with over the years, but these are my current favourite, tried and tested supplies.
A note on sourcing art supplies- I love going and supporting our local art shop, and have bought quite a lot of my paper, pens and kiddie craft things there, but sometimes convenience is king (especially with three little ones) and Amazon comes to the rescue. (If you click on the links shown and purchse, then you will be supporting me using my affiliate link, which costs you no extra. But I mostly linked just so you can see the pictures of what they look like in real life!)
You’ll doubtless see snapshots of the things I use over on instagram if you’re following along there. What are your favourite art supplies to use?
