Being away and embarking on our little excurions reminded me of the importance of imagination and adventure for all of us- not just for children but things that we can cultivate in our lives as adults, too. We climbed around rockpools, wellington boots and nets at the ready as the little wells of salt water were closely examined by little eyes.
Those rugged cliffs and shores of Cornwall made the adventures and smugglers tales of Enid Blyton’s the Famous Five series hard to put away from my mind, and whilst I never actually traversed those caves or entered perilous situations with them, I felt a part of their group, being there along with them the whole time.
And even when possibilities of whistling along on a train or driving to a new unexplored area are slim, we can open the eyes of our minds and imagination in other ways, even from our own homes. By exploring the worlds created in stories, books, even films, we can explore and refresh our taste for adventure even as we curl up after a long day.
I hope that these family adventures will provide fuel for these little imaginations, that their hearts and minds will be expanded by the new places they see both with their eyes and through the wonder of the books we share together.
