With a craft fair the other week which kept me busy making cards and crochet headbands (see them here) and some sewing things pinned which I’ve had my eye on for a while, I’ve been creating more than usual lately.
Typically during nap time I’ve been sneaking up to the attic (study/ craft room/ spare room) to do something fun. I finished another maxi skirt, following this tutorial rather than the gathered version I did last time. It’s a much more fitted, finished looking skirt in the end, and with a nice comfy waistband. I made a mistake pinning it and spent about the same amount of time sewing as I did unpicking, but got there in the end!
I’d also seen a men’s shirt to women’s shirt on pinterest and so nabbed one of Josh’s old denim shirts to try it on. I’m pretty proud of my increasing sewing skills, as I managed to do gathers and pleats and everything without a problem. I’ve been through my wardrobe to pull out things I’m no longer wearing and trying to make things to replace rather than buying- this way I think more about what I want and value it more because of the time and effort gone into it. Soon I’m hoping to upcycle some old clothes into new ones for a certain little girl.
One day I’d love to have a big, light room just to create in- probably with wooden floors so that Phoebe could jump around in paint and things with me. Living in England is great, but space in all our flats and houses has been both limited and quickly filled by stuff. Despite the carpeted challenges, I’m hoping to get messy with Phoebe soon, fingers crossed she doesn’t go for our sofa with paint covered hands!! She really loves drawing, not always on the paper, especially with felt tips because they’re easy to use. I’m a bit apprehensive about using paint when she’s not in her highchair and restricted from touching anything else, but I’m hoping letting go a little won’t have too dire consequences… On that note, Alisa Burke did a really great post about how she creates with her little one. It’s challenged me to not to be so cautious- and I’m hopeful that when Phoebe gets to Lucy’s age she will be able to concentrate and not eat crayons any more. For now they’re out of circulation in our house.
